Blog Post 5: Changes to My Study Programme

 Dear students,

I graduated from university about ten years ago, it sounds like a long time, but for me, it's like yesterday!
As you know, I studied translation first, and even though we paid a lot of money for our program there were many things that I would have liked to change, some of them I know that they changed, but I'm focusing on my study years.

In terms of curriculum, I think we had classes that were not necessary, or classes that were repeated, we had Theory of Translation in English and Portuguese, but the theory was the same!! One of them was completely unnecessary. The class on English culture was basically a history class of the kings and queens of the UK, it was so boring, we had to memorize the book and then give presentations about it, it was a waste of time, and of course, I remember less than half. What about the history of the United States, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and so many other countries that speak English? Nothing.
Also, it was good that I liked English, because ironically the worst teachers were from English!! I had some good ones, but I had some that were horrible, completely outdated.

I believe that the workload was very appropriate, we had important evaluations all semester, so by the end of the semester, I wasn’t as stressed as some friends from other majors.

I studied at Usach, which I loved, but unfortunately, our faculty was really poor, and our facilities were very precarious, especially the toilets. The doors were falling and we didn’t even have toilet paper in them.

Fortunately, I know things have changed, and I’m glad because we have to fight for the ones that come after us, don’t we?

 Instructions:
Write about some changes that could be made to your study program (anthropology). Among others, think about:
- The curriculum (the subjects you have to study)
- Workload and length of studies
- Faculty facilities (buildings and infrastructure)
- Use of technologyç
- Teaching methods

Blog Post 4: Time travel to the past or future

Wow! Time travel? That would be awesome! If I could travel in time I would like to go to the past and future. I would like to see myself as a child and tell that little girl that everything would be ok, that she would find what she likes and work on it, that she would have a family that she loves and that being nerd would be cool in the future.

I would like to travel to the future as well, maybe 10 years into the future, and see my daughter and the teenager that she’s becoming. I hope I’m there too, and see if we have the good relationship I want to have with her, and see myself and my husband a little older but still together.

I would also like to see my grandparents, and if they are not there, I would like to know when they passed away, so I can be prepared. I would also like to see my parents to know they are OK, and my siblings, to find out if their plans worked out the way they wanted.

I would only travel for a sneak peek, not to stay, you see, I’m enjoying life now, I’m living in the moment, watching my daughter processes, and I’d like to continue doing so, but seeing into the future would give me a glimpse of what’s coming.

Blog Post 3: My Dream Job

Since I was at school, I always had different jobs in mind, I pictured myself being a psychologist, an actress, a businesswoman, and many others. However, being a teacher was something that came natural to me, I started teaching when I was at school, I taught English to my classmates before the tests, and I also taught English and Spanish when I was at university, that is how I got extra money, even though I was studying translation at that time.

I studied translation because I love languages and my dad told me I would starve If I became a teacher. However, the first real job that I found was teaching at a private university, my coordinator told me I was good, so I continued with that path until today. Because I wasn’t a “real” teacher I got a master’s degree in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, so now I have the studies to back me up.

My dream for the future is to become a professor, which means, a teacher who teaches students who want to become teachers as well. In that way, I could discuss language with people interested and curious about the language. Teaching at a Translation major would also be a dream job, because it would mean studying and teaching English and Spanish.

What about you?

Blog Post 2: The best holidays ever / The best concert ever

I’ve been to many concerts, I love them, especially rock concerts, I’ve seen Black Sabbath, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Foo Fighters, Imagine Dragons, I also saw Queen when they came with Adam Lambert, so it’s very difficult to choose only one. However, this time I’ll choose the concert by The Killers.
The Killers is a rock band from Las Vegas, in the United States, they are very famous and have won several awards.
The concert was in the Movistar Arena, about seven years ago, I had wanted to go to that concert for a very long time, but I didn’t have the money, so I thought “whatever, next time”, but on the day of the concert my husband calls me like two hours before the concert, it was a Tuesday, and he said, “I won 2 tickets for The Killers, get ready”. I was so happy! The thing is that he won VIP tickets, we were so close to the stage that I could see the band very closely.
It was one of the best concerts, they sounded just like on the radio, Brandon Flowers’ voice was amazing and the concert had a bit of everything, lasers, smoke, balloons, and confetti. I had the best time and I always thank my husband for it.
And now they are coming back!!! They have a concert in November, and I hope I can see them again!

Blog Post 1: A country you would like to visit

Hi everyone,

Today I would like to write about Japan, which is one of the countries I would like to visit in no more than 10 years’ time. I believe its culture is completely different from ours and the architecture is also very different. I studied Japanese for a couple of years, and I found it very difficult, but I also had classes on Japanese culture and it was so different that I was fascinated by it.
I would like to visit different temples there, parks and also go to the capital Tokyo to visit famous locations there, I would like to eat a lot of food, buy many kawaii things, like presents and clothes.
A few years ago, my husband and I decided we would go there in 2021, but clearly, that wasn't possible; our new goal is 2030, I hope we can do it, you never know what could happen, but before I travel there I would like to learn Japanese again, I forgot almost everything, and I want to be able to speak a little before I get there.
Other places I would like to visit are Italy, Vietnam, Ireland, and many others, but we’ll leave that for the future.

Blog Post 0: Who Am I?

Hello dear students!

Welcome to a new semester of English, I'm your teacher Pamela Lara and I'm here to tell you some things about me.

I am a Translator and English teacher who was born in Puerto Montt, I moved to Santiago when I was 19 years old and I've been living here since then. I'm married and I met my husband at university on the first week of classes, we got married 6 years later and now we have a beautiful daughter called Eloísa, who is 4 years old.

I love watching TV, movies, and series, of almost all genres, I don't like horror very much, but I love action, thrillers, and romance movies. At this moment I'm watching several series, such as, The Good Doctor, Grey's Anatomy, This is us, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Euphoria, and Friends (for the 100th time).

I hope this semester works out well, even though it is online.

Nice to meet you!
